Brownswood Bubblers Five // Electric Wire Hustle

by alexpatchwork on February 12, 2010

This month we’re introducing artists to you that feature on the brand new Brownswood Bubblers Five CD which drops on 8th March 2010. Who’s up next? Electric Wire Hustle – a dope trio whose loping, psych-tinged soul music unsurprisingly caught GP’s ear, despite the fact that they’re based 11,682 miles away in New Zealand. Worldwide innit!? He’s particularly fond of the string-laden Whitfield-esque anthem – ‘They Don’t Want’ – which opens Bubblers Five in fine style. Don’t sleep on these guys – you’re going to be hearing a lot more from them in 2010.

What’s up guys? Can you introduce yourselves please?
Electric Wire Hustle is: Mara TK (vocals/guitar/bass), Myele Manzanza (drums/percussion) and Taay Ninh (keyboards/mpc/bass). We each play a part in the production, recording and performance of our music alongside our engineer – both for studio and live; Benny Tones. Currently we reside in Wellington, Aotearoa (New Zealand).

How would you describe your music?
It’s our own take on soul music. Psychedelic, hip-hop and jazz influences are strong, as are contemporary and electronic – but it is all centered around soul.

Where do you draw your inspiration?
Far and wide – friends / family / our musical community locally. We have Maori, African and Vietnamese roots to draw from both musically and culturally – so it all intertwines. Having grown up in Aotearoa and also having been privileged to travel and perform around the globe also plays its part.

What releases are out there or coming soon?
We have a 12″ EP (‘Perception’) which was released through Japanese label Wonderful Noise in March 2009 and we have further releases on the way. Our self-titled debut album will be released internationally in July.

Are you guys touring to support the album release?
We will be touring Europe in July also and are planning tours to the USA and Japan later in the year. Currently we are finishing up our festival circuit through New Zealand.

Where can folks can check out you and your music?
