Gilles Peterson Worldwide Vol.4 No.2 // Herbie Hancock

by alexpatchwork on December 24, 2010

Gilles meets one of his musical heroes – the legendary Herbie Hancock – and goes in deep on the Blue Note years, discussing the amazing records he recorded, the celebrated musicians he worked with and the culture of innovation within the Blue Note family. We were so pleased with the interview that we’ve left it largely intact, and the result is a marathon 2-part podcast… we hope you enjoy it.

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year from GP and everyone at Brownswood!!

Is the sound quality of the spoken interview really quite on anyone else’s download? The tracks are fine but the interview sounds like it’s being played through my mixing headphones 2 foot away from me on the mixer!

The interview wasn’t recorded in a studio, so the quality isn’t as good as usual admittedly. Doesn’t sound too bad to me though. Hope it doesn’t spoil the interview for you Simon!

  • Jason

The sound on the interview is very quite, it sounds like it’s coming out of my headphones. It wasn’t as quite when Gilles played some of it on his show a few weeks ago, any ideas?

Hope everyone around the world is having a great Christmas

    Best Wishes

Oh my god.. an interview like this is simply astounding.. you could listen to him talk about his life as a musician all day. Thanks so much!

Great job Gilles. Superb interview. Good to hear Herbie so lucid and eloquent about those Blue Note years. I was wondering if there was a part three, discussing the Headhunters/VSOP years and into the disco years and 80s? I imagine he had to leave the studio at that point!

    Many thanks,
    Nick

re part 1: two words – absolutely brilliant. It is great to hear Herbie in an interview after many years of being a fan (through getting into his music through Gilles Peterson); he doesn’t sound like I thought he would. The interview is first rate, two things stand out – GP asking good questions and allowing Herbie to speak; the balance in the podcast being an interview and a chat. For that reason I much prefer this (and the sound quality) to the broadcast version which I thought was confusingly edited and a tad slick (sorry Alex). Give me the ‘rough’ version which flows, any day.

part 2 does not download automatically in i-tunes subscriptions, I was confused with the tracklisting above!

    Re. Sanjiv

I’m aware of the itunes issue – VERY irritating. Been having loads of problems with itunes podcasting and struggling to find solutions. I’ll persevere, but in the meantime I can only apologise. Thanks for the positive feedback. I’ve amended the tracklisting above and hopefully it’s clearer now.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone! Glad you enjoyed it.

Nice one Gilles, excellent interview. So good to hear something like this that is not rushed or edited to death.
Also good to hear the tracks in there entirety. Just wanted it to go on and hear about the rest of his career.
Thanks and happy new year to al atl Brownwood !

Wonderful interview- but surely this can’t be it??????? there must be a part 3 please??? in the very least he needs to say thanks at the end of the interview. What an absolute legend!

  • slowcastle

Thank you guys, this is a template on how to do an interview to a living legend… no editing, all the time and space for Herbie to tell about his music and all these stories behind every track. I guess we own a big thank you to Herbie for his time as well, I met a few stroppy musician in my time that would have not be so laid back and chatty talking about their careers! what I like about this show is that you can really tell that both Gilles and Herbie enjoyed themselves…

Love it! Great idea to give extra space and time to do justice to The Man.

“functioning off the instinct rather than the brain, i think that very important” – what a legend.
Amazing interview, just wish it continued on into the electric years!Thank you Gilles

Gilles mentioned this interview on his show today and I had to check it out. This was a real treat. I’m a big Herbie fan. My uncle drove me to DC from Chicago for college back in the day and we listened to Maiden Voyage on that car trip. He really enjoyed that album and it was nice to hear the history behind it. RIP Uncle Billy
