Worldwide Awards 2012 - A Word from Gilles

by Mumblz on January 24, 2012

It’s only after the event that I realise how diverse the artists were. As the year turns and I play the Kiwanuka’s or Thundercats off mp3 s and cds I don’t know how or if they’ll work on a live stage at the WW awards in January… it all turned out great of course – well diverse (more than last year) and I’m sure a little confusing to those who happened to be there coz Sbtrkt were on the bill…but thats the whole idea. I’ll never forget the day I first saw real jazz played…so when BBNG were on doing their McCoy Tyner meets QuestLove version of CMYK I was sure that someone left in the crowd would be having that ‘Wayne Shorter’ moment that I’d had decades ago!

I thought the crowd were amazing again this year – most people got in early doors and every time I’d announce a band or DJ the roof would come off – The Pyramids went down a storm – and giving the Lifetime Achievement to Idris was magic – he’s such a gent – if you haven’t checked the podcast I did with him check it HERE

I absolutely loved Dimlite’s live set – wish I’d put it on later now! But he’ll be in Sete this summer so we’ll do it again.. thanks to all the DJs and performers – Yukimi came over from Gothenburg just for that one track with Sbtrkt – she was the only female performer which was weird – well apart from J’Danna who became the biggest success of the night with her rendition on Gil’s ‘Winter in America’ – that and another 15 year old South Londoner Joey doing ‘The Revolution…’ we had our own little ‘x factor’ going down – wonder what Simon Cowell would have thought…

Friday night by the way was really good fun at XOYO – loads of people who’d come down for the weekend could catch a bit more of the vibe and 2morrow’s Victory showed us with 5 songs why there is such a good buzz round them, whilst Flako and Ifan Dafyd gave us all something new to bounce to – nuff props and stuff to DJ Lefto who sent the room into a frenzy when he played London Posse’s ‘Hows Life in London’…big (wish Dobie had been in the house). I think XOYO is a really strong venue by the way – may well do another party or 2 later this year.

Nice one, Gilles P. And congrats.

J’Danna – wow! What a talent. Her future is pregnant with promise, I can tell.

All the best for the year.

Have been for the past 5 years or so and I think it was the best one yet. Or at least certainly since the bigger venue move. Pyramids, Kiwanuka, SBTRKT, BBNG, the youngsters and Kutmah were all superb!
What a fine dj Lefto is too.
A great night – long may it continue!

Been reading all the reviews…sounds great. Any advice for someone in the states who wants to attend Sete this year? Really don’t want to miss that.
