As we ready the next instalment in the Brownswood Electr*c series, we’ll be profiling the artists featured in the weeks leading up to the release on 24th September. Alex Patchwork is on compiling duties once again, alongside Tom McCarthy (Black Atlantic / Earnest Endeavours) and the pair has unearthed another remarkable assortment of underground talent. Listen to a teaser of the compilation below.
Jammed with exclusive, previously unreleased material – the rewards of endless online trawling, Soundcloud sifting and Bandcamp rummaging – Brownswood electr*c 3 unveils brand new heat from a host of electronic artists. We caught up with Jaded Laur of Glasgow’s All Caps crew for an insight in his production style, influences and more…
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself please. Who are you, where are you from etc.?
I’m Jaded Laur. I’m 18. I’m from Glasgow in Scotland and I like writing music.
How would you describe your music?
Sort of messy house music I guess. I just like throwing sounds together and seeing what the result is. My tracks are kinda full of all these obscure layers mixing with one another. I like making things across a variety of tempos and sounds and that work against the grain of typical song structure.
Where do you draw your inspiration?
I like writing music to pictures. Usually I’ll watch a movie or something and then write music that I think could work with the images. I try not to write music of a specific genre or write similar things.
Whom do you count amongst your most significant influences when it comes to production?
I couldn’t really say exactly but at the moment, in terms of up-tempo electronic music, I draw inspiration from the likes of Aphex Twin, Radiohead, FlyLo, Actress, Fatima Yamaha (Bas Bron), Floating Points. Countless more. Although I usually just sit down and start making something without thinking about how I want it to sound.
What releases / gigs are out there or coming soon?
I like using a lot of aliases so I have more music out there/doing different things under different names. No gigs upcoming currently sorry.
Do you have a current DJ mix or any tracks that are available for free download right now that we could point folks to?
Yeah there’s a folder of Jaded Laur stuff from 2010-2011 up on mediafire. Feel free to download and share.
Where can folks go online to check out you and your music?
What are you going to do after this interview?
Fill up a bowl with pasta, hit the couch and watch the Sopranos.
