‘Gilles is joined by US singer/songwriter Valerie June in session. Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, Valerie’s sound encompasses folk, soul, gospel, and blues, and she performs tracks from her current album, ‘Pushin Against A Stone’ on the show, as well as an additional track, Twined And Twisted.

Gilles switches up the time signatures with another visit to the ‘Secret Waltz Club’ and the ‘Do Over’ features two tracks built from the Slum Village classic, ‘Fall in Love’. The poem is written and drawn from the perspective of a jazz musician who has just arrived at its current destination (Rotterdam).

Rotterdam and jazz are inseparable. Jazz Club BIRD is an exponent of this rich musical tradition and represents a new chapter in the Rotterdam music scene.

This means that the Théâtre de la Mer  becomes the evening venu from Monday – Wednesday before handing over to St Christ for the rest of the week. Make sure you come for the whole week!

GP drops knowledge on lesser known record stores the World over that you won’t find in the guidebook.

1.Elena de San Telmo, Buenos Aires

Gilles helped start the tango revival playing the likes of Astor Piazolla and the Gotan Project before it was fashionable, so it is appropriate to start this list in Buenos Aires.

When visiting Buenos Aires, most tourists head to the main market in San Telmo for its famous Sunday fare of paintings, jewellery and bric-a-brac. Goods, including records are expensive though. Much better in terms of selections and considerably cheaper is Estados Unidos. Discreetly located in the corner of a working fruit and veg market, the tables outside full of records lure you to the real gems that lie inside. The interior of the shop has bold, bright Art Noveau-style paintings; bizarrely, artists materials; an old turntable and crates and crates of records. Come here for your Argentine pressings of The Beatles, and albums by the aforementioned tango god Astor Piazolla and Nestor Marconi, the Herbie Hancock of tango. One of the best shops in the world.

2.The David White Gallery, Wellington

Chaos galore

The David White Gallery typifies everything that is so enjoyable about record shops, and shops that sell records. Located off the beaten path behind the popular Cuba Street, the shop is a disorganised bedlam of odds n’ ends, curios, memories from yesteryear and lots of records. Some are stocked, in no order, in boxes. The rest form vertical piles defying gravity. The delightful owner David White, full of stories and mugs of coffee for regulars, makes the shop a must. You have not really been digging unless you have paid a visit.

3. Rick’s Records, Hastings

Local DJ, Ade P, tipped me off about this discreet establishment. Located at the back of a lock up, walk underneath shutters, and into an indoor market selling various wares. At one end of the market is Rick’s, marked with two oversized records protruding from the window. The large shop stocks everything from Sixties psychedelia to New York disco. The friendly owner – I assume Rick – guided me through a large section of Isaac Hayes’ records, all in good condition and reasonably priced, which sum up what the shop is all about.

4. Aquarius Records, San Francisco

I love Aquarius Records. It has a big glass façade full of alluring records and a weekly display of album covers. Is there anything better than going into a record shop for the first time and seeing tens of brightly coloured Cal Tjader albums? It is this attention to detail which makes Aquarius a winner. And the shop has records to die for. I luckily visited in the days of two dollars to the pound sterling, and duly bought the whole Wayne Shorter section. I hit the previously mentioned Cal Tjader section next, a big Gilles Peterson favourite. There were rare live albums I have never seen as well as cheap, cheerful and very good Fantasy label re-issues. I bought the whole lot.

Every genre is stocked at Aquarius, from West African funk to French pop, but the shop is not too big to be overwhelming. Again the shop is made by the friendly and eccentric owner, a sixties musical veteran, who fingered each Shorter album I bought and told a story around it. Wonderful.

5. Conch Records, Auckland

Conch Records is a de facto stop for visiting DJs, including the likes of DJ Premier, Carl Craig and Gilles, stocking as it does the more discernible side of house and techno and a host of releases from the jazz tinged club world. The shop is spacious with lots of natural light, boasts an excellent courtyard cafe and also stocks a range of t-shirts, books and posters.

Owner Cian, and if he is around his friend DJ Sam E, are wonderful hosts. On my last visit they spent considerable time listing a number of records by local artists I should check out, and if the records were not in stock, even going as far as recommending other shops I should go to. My record shopping experience was made complete with an invitation to join them for a drink at a secret bar opposite. There I was introduced to most of Auckland’s music players. I then let it be known to Cian and Sam E, I was writing a book, The Secret List, on record shops around the world…

Musicians helping musicians – that’s what it boils down to. Highly acclaimed Detroit music producer, DJ and Sound Signature label head, Theo Parrish, will lead a music production workshop for the first time in London to help raise money for the Steve Reid Foundation – a charity started by Gilles Peterson to help musicians in crisis and to support emerging talent.

Gilles is joined in the studio by singer/songwriter James Blake, who performs tracks from his new album ‘Overgrown’. Gilles first supported the South London producer’s debut EP, CMYK back in 2010, and since then his profile has continued to rise, with his cross-over hit cover of Feist’s ‘Limit To Your Love’ entering the charts later that year and his debut album being nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2011. With a powerful live show which manages to effortlessly combine electronic and organic sounds, James has moved beyond his dubstep roots, to find a sound that combines more traditional songwriting with forward thinking production techniques. He performs three live tracks for Gilles in the hub and speaks about his collaborations with Brian Eno and music producer, RZA.

Also, following the sad passing of Don Blackman, his self-titled debut is given the Significant Album treatment. There’s a husband and wife Bloodlines feature from Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anna Muldruw and brand new music from Theo Parrish, Omar, Neneh Cherry & Four Tet.

Gilles catches up with Simon from Bonobo, whose new album ‘The North Borders’ came out this week. Simon is currently practising with his band in Nashville, Tennessee, ahead of dates in the US and Europe. Album of The Week comes from Atoms For Peace, and there is a Bloodlines feature involving jazz legend Thelonious Monk and his son, TS Monk, who released some classic disco material in the 1970s. There are also a couple Do Overs, featuring Kanye West’s Flashing Lights alongside a new producer Tuesday Born, as well as a Fela Kuti sample, featured on the new Homeboy Sandman EP. There’s brand new music from James Blake’s Overgrown album that comes out next week, alongside new Tyler The Creator, Laura Mvula and Omar, as well classics from Ultra Nate, Diana Ross, Raphael Saadiq and Arthur Russell.

Deja 1an que Gilles Peterson et La Rafinerie ont lancé ce concept particulier . L’idée était simple mais ambitieuse : proposer une alternative aux soirées « classiques » qui commencent à minuit et qui se terminent au petit matin uniquement accès sur un style de musique et dont la fonction principale du dj est de vous faire danser coute que coute, limitant souvent l’artiste dans ses choix et l’écartant fréquemment de ses inspirations premières. Le dimanche après midi est donc apparu presque comme une évidence.

La Bellevilloise a aussi été un choix évident : en effet outre l’amour que nous portons a cette salle et à son équipe, la modularité des espaces était capitale pour vous offrir plusieurs ambiances.

C’est ainsi qu’en cinq éditions seulement, le pari est relevé et la TEA-TIME est devenu LE rendez-vous des amateurs de bon son, des curieux, des novices et des connaisseurs. Bref, un véritable melting pot ou l’on croise du monde… beaucoup de monde, des jeunes, des moins jeunes, des enfants, des amis, des parisiens, des provinciaux, des étrangers… tous réunis autour d’une passion commune : La Musique.

La Tea-Time c’est donc avant tout un esprit, un moment de partage, une ambiance et un Gilles Peterson en maitre de cérémonie qui s’autorise tous les délires.

Le 14 avril, on souffle la 1ere bougie et bien sur, vous le savez, il y aura des surprises et pleins d’amis !

As part of BBC 6 Music’s David Bowie week, Gilles’ significant record is Bowie’s 9th studio album ‘Young Americans’ which came out back in 1975. The album features a host of legendary musicians including John Lennon, Luther Vandross, the drummer from Sly And The Family Stone, Andy Newmark, and legendary producer Tony Visconti on the boards, with Gilles playing his favourite 3 tracks from the now legendary LP.  Coupled with  tracks from the new Bonobo album and a brand new track from Kyodai the show pomises to be a good’un. Gilles is joined in the studio by Om’Mas Keith. Gilles first championed the work of Om’Mas over a decade ago, when Sa Ra Creative Partners first broke onto the leftfield soul/hip hop scene. The group got signed by Kanye West, and although their debut album never saw the light of day, Om’Mas’ output both as part of the trio, as well as on his own, has been constant ever since. Om’Mas recently won a Grammy through his work on Frank Ocean’s debut album, Channel Orange, and this month has been touring Europe with Brandt Brauer Frick, following his collab on the ‘Plastic Like Your Mother’ track. The two discuss everything from Gary Bartz to Sun Ra, and Sa Ra through to Om’Mas’ most recent projects.

There is also brand new music from Ghostpoet, Floating Points, a previously unheard version of a Fela Kuti classic, as well as some old favourites from Rufus and Chaka Khan, Joyce, The Staple Singers and and D’Angelo.

Gilles brings rising jazz giant Gregory Porter to Oval Space in Bethnal Green for what is sure to be an epic session. With a DJ career spanning decades, GP’s love affair with jazz can be traced back to legendary sessions at the Electric Ballroom, The Royal Oak (Special Branch), The Wag Club and beyond. Gilles continues to champion jazz in all its forms, the heritage and the future. Spinning either side of Porter and his live band, Gilles will be digging deep into the Brownswood Basement archives.

Following Porter’s sell-out London shows last year, along with his immense performance at the Worldwide Festival in July 2012, it was inevitable and downright necessary to have the superb blues-baritone and his powerhouse band come to London’s most exciting new space.

The Grammy-nominated Porter began his career in theatre, singing gospel and blues before finding his feet in jazz. He released his debut album ‘Water’ to universal critical and popular acclaim in 2010, featuring the political anthem ‘1960 What?’ – a certified modern classic.
