One of the finest contemporary soul voices to come out of the UK and an all round national treasure, Alice Russell dropped by Brownswood a little while back as she was preparing to release her brand new album ‘To Dust’. It has to be said she mostly came for Cheese Wednesday, but she did catch up with Gilles in the basement to discuss her ongoing collaborations with the likes of Quantic and TM Juke, the new record, as well as spinning some inspirational tracks.

Genius singer-songwriter and production mastermind Jamie Lidell (check his tour dates) has been roaming around the fringes of mainstream consciousness for over a decade. A veteran of Warp’s impressive artist roster, he has consistently flirted with pop sensibilities but his approach has always skewed delightfully from the left, resulting in a string of killer albums that have cemented his global reputation. His new album ‘Jamie Lidell’ finds him in synth heaven, inspired by the likes of Jam & Lewis, George Clinton and Cameo, and on a recent trip to London he joined Gilles in the basement for a good ol’ chat about the past, present and future plans.

Steve Reid Foundation Lift Off!

Gilles set up the Steve Reid Foundation last year in memory of his close friend who sadly passed away after suffering from throat Cancer in April 2010 without the money for treatment that could have saved his life.

Last years efforts to raise money were spearheaded by Gilles’s marathon run, which he completed in 4 hours 43 minutes and 9 seconds. Rumour has it that he will do it again…!

“This is something that is very close to me and that I feel strongly about, and wanted to set up something as a lasting legacy to help others in similar situations. To this end, I am running the London Marathon on April 17th on behalf of the Steve Reid Foundation.” GP.

This summer brought the success of the rooftop party and we are pleased to announce that we raised £1,000 for the foundation.

A big thanks to the venue organisers – the Bootstrap Company, those who came and danced the night away and of course to those who pulled out a very special performance – Koreless, Floating Points and Four Tet an old friend of Reid’s.

We now are now on Facebook and Twitter so you can keep up-to-date with all of our forthcoming fundraising activities.

We are currently applying for charitable status and in the meantime working closely with the Musicians Benevolent Fund to aid the plight of struggling musicians, especially those with long-term and life threatening health problems.

We look forward to seeing you at our next fundraising event.

The shocking events this last week in Japan will affect us all. Many of my closest friends, family and work colleagues are there. It is my second home. As a DJ I have spent some of my most inspired nights in Japan. I always come back inspired, refreshed and motivated.

The Japanese people have always shown me love and affection – they are the most passionate music fans and if they like what you do – they let you know! We all need that in life. Japan is a positive nation and as such I am sure it will eventually recover from it’s current trauma.
