Gilles Peterson // Significant Album // #137

August 19, 2016

We’re continuing the countdown of the albums that have shaped Gilles Peterson so far. The album this week is Identity by Airto.

Released on Arista in 75′. An impressive cast of musicians, Identity credits many legends besides Airto Moreira. From the Brazilians Egberto Gismonti, Paulinho Tapajós, Raul de Souza and Airto’s then wife and musical soulmate, Flora Purim. The saxophone is articulated by Wayne Shorter and the production attributed to Herbie Hancock.

Jazz fusing elements of Brazil. Beauty through melody, lyrical poetry, and a generous dose of emotions and ardour. Rich in percussion yet patient in its rhythm.
