GP Weekly Round-Up // 11-12-12
December 11, 2012
A slightly dodgy start this week on 6 Music as I pressed the wrong button and began with The Do Over combination of Dilla / Sergio Mendes… sounded good though so kept it bubbling. Saturday’s show felt good. Slipping in 2 ad breaks and the news was odd at first but I’m now beginning to accept it and use it to build the show around it.
Keeping it all quite high energy for the first half an hour and totally following the mood from 3.30 on…
Bouncing different features at random from Bloodlines to The Significant Album (Dave Brubeck) allows me to feature stuff without losing the essence of the show. This weeks Bloodlines featured mother and son from Lebanon – Fairuz Wahdon and Elias Rahbani – I want more of this kind of thing… thanks to Victor Kiswell in Paris for inspiring me with this.
Someone sent in a good idea for Omar and his dad who was in FBI group – maybe next week, but I still need to do Tim Maia and Ed motta… the Dave Brubeck stuff sounded really good, specially Unsquare Dance that I used to play out and in fact slipped into my set last night at Jez Nelson’s Jazz in the Round Christmas Party at the superb Cockpit Theatre…What a venue and crowd to listen to Jez Nelson perform Misterioso for Children in Need with a band led by Jason Yarde… loved their version of Nature Boy – wish it was recorded. I recommend you make it down to one of Jez’s future Monday nighters in 2013, which he calls Jazz in the Round because the band takes center stage with the audience nestled around the room.
There were so many 6music studio moments this week – the most response came for the Ariya Astrobeat Archestra… Romare…Typesun…
Laura Mvula and in particular the Philip Owusu tune… major rush of interest for this one.
The last hour was aided by the news of a home win at the Emirates –(I was surprised how much those 2 last two Swansea goals derailed me last week!)
Good to hear more about Ultraista and their excellent debut – listen to the interview at around 1 hour 45.
This week is looking big…I’m going up to Nottingham to collect my honorary degree.. I’m in Istanbul on Friday at Propaganda for a Lounge FM 96 party and Saturday
on 6 Music, my guest is Shuggie Otis with a bunch of unreleased tracks!
Thanks to the people who came and gave me a cheer at the Bedford half marathon yesterday – I loved it even though Zinger and I started 3 minutes late because we couldn’t find our gels… classic. Still did it in 1 hour 56 which I was delighted with… laters!
