Worldwide Premiere // Dexter Story feat. Yared Teshale – Sidet Eskemeche
October 15, 2015
Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Dexter Story is a man of many talents. From Snoop Dogg’s product manager and Meshell Ndegeocello’s day-to-day representative, he’s also performed with luminaries like Dwight Trible, Quadron, Sa-Ra Creative Partners and Gaslamp Killer. His own work distils a background in soul, funk, jazz and folk into a fondness for global sounds and for his latest LP on Soundway Records, he looks to East Africa.
Borrowing from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia and Kenya, Wondem (meaning ‘brother’ in Amharic), came about as Story was composing for Todd Simon’s ethio-jazz ensemble in L.A. The record features collaborations withMiguel Atwood-Ferguson, Mark de Clive-Lowe and vocalists Alsarah Elgadi and Yared Teshale. On ‘Sidet Eskemeche’ (meaning “we will remember” or “it will never be forgotten”), Story teams up with the latter in a nostalgic affair in more than just its name. Psychedelic guitars and clip-clop percussion march at a steady pace, trumpets boldly call out and Teshale lends her indigenous vocals on top.
Wondem is out 23rd October on Soundway Records. Pre-order from the Soundway website.
