Kutmah Selects // Sam Irl & Ritornell

March 10, 2012

Sam Irl (above) is a 27 year old German-American from Lower Bavaria, Germany. He plays jazz piano and has been making beats for about 10+ years now. He tries to make honest and real music, no matter what it is, it’s got to have soul and be deep.

We caught up with Richard Eigner aka Ritornell (pictured below)

Introduction?

Ritornell: I’m hailing from Linz in Upper Austria and I’m currently living in beautiful Vienna. A typical Ritornell track tries to cross the borders of experimental acoustic music, >minimalism< and electronica with a focus on the symbiotic use of acoustic elements and electronically produced and processed sounds. Lately I’ve also been obsessed with the preparation and creation of acoustic instruments and right now i’m busy building a Tubolon out of steel water pipes with the handicraft expertise of my dad.

Influences?

Ritornell: My all-time favourite record is Miles Davis – Panthalassa in Bill Laswell’s mix reconstruction. It’s probably the most interesting combination of electronics and Jazz ever and still sounds extremely fresh. The music was recorded from between 1969 – 1974! Other huge influences: Fennesz, Rhythm & Sound, Cristian Vogel, Morton Feldman, Dimlite, Hauschka. My absolutely favourite drummer at the moment: CHRIS DAVE!

Forthcoming?

Ritornell: There are plenty, actually. I’ve remixed Douglas Greed’s song Morning Gloria feat. Mooryc<, our in March on Freude Am Tanzen. Ritornell, Mimu & Sofa 23 have been working on an audiovisual interpretation of Elfriede Jelinek’s book >Macht nichts. Eine kleine Trilogie des Todes<. I’ve just finished mixing the music with Sam Irl in Dolby 5.1. for the DVD release later this year. At the moment Martin Riedler and me are composing the music for a very interesting theatre play called >Creation of Uncanny Matter<. The premiere will be on March 15th of March in Vienna. Besides that I’m recording some drum & percussion licks for Dorian Concepts upcoming record. Ritornell is currently working on the second album. That’s the biggest plan for 2012 of course.

The compilation drops on March 26th and can be preordered from Rough Trade here
