Havanan street scene

“My Town” is a brand new feature wherein friends and family from around the world give us the lowdown on their home town – favourite bars, restaurants, record shops and more. Forget Time Out – this is the only city guide you need.

Next up is Edgaro aka Edgaro El Productor En Jefe from hip-hop supremos Doble Filo, a Havanan local who gives up the goods on his hometown.

Where is the best place to:

Party:

The Beltold Brech (Linea y J Vedado), always nice concerts happening all week, electronic, jazz, funk etc. always a nice vibe.

Chill out: Benito’s Budha Bar (at la Cabaña Morro de la Habana), this is a kind of hidden bar; not many people know about it in Havana. It doesn’t promote, you never hear from it on the radio, TV or even underground promo, you get there from a friend that takes you there, it plays great old Cuban music, rock etc, great design and always has the best clientele. This is a place to visit if you want to experience something unique in Havana.

Eat / Drink: Café Song Bar (13 y 70 Miramar), I like to hit the place after my night gigs to have a snack a drink and relax with my friends.

Where is the best place to buy music?
An old record store in Neptuno street around the corner of the Havana Vieja EGREM recording studios, I try to pass as often as I can to grab rare Cuban soul, pop, jazz records.

What’s the local expression/saying?
Cuba’s slang is always evolving, always morphing with the context. I think one of my favorites expressions come from NG La Bandas Lider and father of Timba Music, Jose Luis Cortes. I will always remember the first song he said “Ataca Chicho¨ it instantly became part of Cuban’s vocabulary, like many other expressions after that. It means something like “go for it dude”.

Sum up your town in three words…
eclectic, loud, colourful

What’s the best local delicacy/street food/snack?
Cuban Food in general is great. I don’t think there’s any specific outstanding snack. I’d recommend fruits. You can get fresh and large variety of fruits in almost any corner, really cheap.

Who is the best local talent in your area?
A singer called ¨El Estudiante¨, I’m starting to produce some music for him, been waiting many years for a voice like he’s.
