My Town // LeFtO presents Brussels
December 3, 2012
“My Town” is a brand new feature wherein friends and family from around the world give us the lowdown on their home town – favourite bars, restaurants, record shops and more. Forget Time Out – this is the only city guide you need.
Up first is our Belgian brother and globetrotting DJ/cratedigger/radio broadcaster LeFtO – repping the mighty Brussels…
Where I like to party:
One of the most succesful monthly soulful party in town, hosted by Deejay Kwak and Bernard Dobbeleer both deep into music inviting national and international artists. A party you must go to if you’re in town.
A monthly night organised by the Onda Sonora deejays at Bronks, Expect disco, house and everything soulful as well as national and international deejays on a great sounding Funktion One soundsystem.
If you’re into tropical rhythms from Latin-America, the Caribbean, the Antilles and Africa, Funky Bompa’s party is an essential party for you. It just moved to a new venue called Jour De Fête in the heart of the city.
Where I like to chill:
Bar du Matin
A beautiful bar in uptown Brussels, nice vibe, outside terrace and a place where you will be able to see great concerts.
Le Roi des Belges
35, Rue Jules Van Praet – 1000 Bruxelles
On one of the corners of the crowded St-Géry square is Le Roi des Belges. Wooden tables and chairs, old tavern style, a cocktail bar on the first floor and a nice terrace outside by the street. If you’re a smoker you might find it fun, visit the smokers area.
Great bar on the Place Flagey, one of my favorite squares in town, known for hosting an old radio station building. The bar has great music playing during the day, serves great food, salads, sandwiches and invites deejays at night.
Bonnefooi means “by chance or haphazardly” in the Brussels’ dialect and the bar is all about music. From the exhibitions to the live music (4 to 5 live bands per week!), Deejays on the weekend and musical events all through the year. They also have a fine selection of drinks, surprising tapas and opening hours that will satisfy the nighthawk in you.
Where I like to eat:
17, Rue pont de la Carpe – 1000 Brussel
For a quick bite, around the corner from the Beursschouwburg we have the freshly opened new Mama Roma. Mama Roma is a pizza chain in Brussels, where you can buy (fast) the pizza per weight and where only taglios can be found or “tiles”, no slices. “Patate Al Tartufo” is my favorite pizza piece there, potatoes and truffes, the quality of the pizza is excellent!
Rue de Moscou 32 – 1060 Bruxelles (Saint-Gilles)
The best meat in town, it literally melts in the mouth, coming from a small Belgian producer of Charolais, and masterfully prepared by Frenchman William, the very friendly boss! Welcoming atmosphere, nice terrace in the summer, chocolate dessert … Basically, a place where I try to go as regularly as I can.
Where is the best place to buy music?
Veals & Geeks
Second hand records, DVDs and computer games, nice magazines, shirts and gadgets. If you don’t have money to spend don’t enter.
1, Rue de la Grand Ile – 1000 Bruxelles
Into electronic music and vinyl? This record shop is definitely worth a visit. They have a good selection of house music, electro, minimal and more.
Not the cheapest second hand shop but has a great collection, you’ll always find something. You might even find a bullet impact on the front window from a robbery back in the day.
What’s the local expression/saying?
Not sure about the local saying, but the national motto is “Unity Is Strength”… But we do have a beautiful slang combining french and flemish, I love it.
Sum up your town in three words:
Multi-cultural / Green / Openminded
What is the best local delicacy?
I’d say chocolate would be one with over 500 shops selling authentic local chocolates. But the local “mitraillette” would be another. It’s french bread, with a hamburger, fries, sauce (with over 20 different sauces to choose), salad, fresh oignon. It’s basically our junk food. And don’t forget the local waffles too!
Who is the best local talent in your area?
There are different scenes like everywhere and each scene has its own talent, in a more experimental beat scene we have the Vlek Records crew, known internationally, with artists like Cupp Cave. In the more traditional hip-hop beat scene we have Monkeyrobot and Noza and there are great French-speaking rappers like Veence Hanao and Grems. But there are also labels doing great releases like On-Point with Maserataaay, Billy Palmier, Jazz Neversleeps and J to the C.
