Roberto Fonseca // AKOKAN European Tour

November 1, 2010

Roberto Fonseca – lynchpin and co-producer (alongside Gilles P) of our Havana Cultura sessions – is in the midst of a European tour right now to celebrate the release of his album “Akokan” (meaning ‘Heart’ in Yoruba). The repertoire is a selection of the pianist’s own compositions, recorded in four days at EGREM studios in Havana. The album clearly demonstrates the musicians’ creative freedom and the mutual chemistry that exists between them, something that really shines on the stage. The “Akokan Tour” brings this new work to the world stage – Fonseca’s performances are emotionally deep, yet also elegantly restrained. He is one of the most distinctive contemporary artists to emerge from the new generation of Cuban jazz musicians and his band – featuring the wonderful Danay Suarez on vocals – are a tight knit unit of similarly gifted individuals.
