Worldwide Premiere // Sarathy Korwar – Mawra (Transcendence)
June 2, 2016
Day To Day is the debut album from percussionist, drummer and producer Sarathy Korwar, fusing traditional folk music of the Sidi community in India (combining East African, Sufi and Indian influences) with jazz and electronics.
A joint venture by Ninja Tune and the Steve Reid Foundation, Day To Day follows the lineage of Sidis, a group who settled in India from Africa as long as 1400 years ago. It also represents the culmination of the same idea that Korwar submitted to the music foundation foundation, to secure a mentorship with its trustees Four Tet, Emanative, Floating Points, Koreless and Gilles Peterson. Premiered here, ‘Mawra’ typifies the polyrhythms that feature strongly on the album, drummed out by the five members of the Sidi Troupe of Ratanpur, reflecting their African heritage and, notably, in stark contrast to the tradition Indian style of drumming in unison.
Sarathy Korwar – Day To Day is out 8th July – pre-order from the Ninja Tune website.
