An Introduction To Marcos Valle
January 10, 2013
The Worldwide Awards celebrate sounds both new and old, and of all the artists taking to the stage this year, Marcos Valle has enjoyed the longest and most incredibly varied career. He’s a bona-fide legend of Brazilian music, who, in a six-decade career has released around 35 albums, blending the bossa nova and samba of his homeland with American soul, rock and later funk and dance sounds.
Marcos Valle initially rose to fame alongside a wave of bossa nova artists in the early 1960s and by the middle of the decade he’d recorded and toured with Sergio Mendes. After spending a few years in the USA, Valle returned to his native Rio and began fusing together his many influences. His expanded musical palette, coupled with a more introspective approach to songwriting, built him a fan base far beyond Brazil.
Prolific to the present day, the entirety of Valle’s sprawling, fifty-year back catalogue is perhaps surprisingly accessible thanks to his amazing sense of melody. Still, it’s difficult to know exactly where to begin on a life in music so rich and varied; here’s a few of Gilles’ favourites to get you started:
