Brownswood Bubblers Eight // Hello Skinny
July 10, 2012
With the next instalment in the Brownswood Bubblers series on the horizon (released worldwide on 16th July), we thought we’d share with you a little insight into this chapter’s featured artists. You can listen to the teaser on our Soundcloud and pre-order the album direct from Brownswood, from Amazon or .
First up is Hello Skinny, aka Tom Skinner, an incredibly talented musician whom we have got to know and love via his work as the drummer with Owiny Sigoma Band. Flying solo for his Hello Skinny project, Skinner works the angles between techno, jazz and folk. Check his remix of ‘Owegi Owandho’ on Owiny Sigoma Band’s ‘Tafsiri Sound EP’ for a taste of how he gets down.
Can you introduce yourself please?
My name is Tom Skinner. I am a drummer and producer from North London making music under the name Hello Skinny.
How would you describe your music?
Essentially it’s music from the heart but I guess you could call it Psych-Dub, North London Techno, Freak-Jazz, Cosmic Electronic Folk or something like that…blah, blah!
Where do you draw inspiration from?
My family, friends and peers. The people around me are the most inspiring people I know. There is so much progressive, creative and forward thinking music happening in London right now, it’s a very exciting place to live.
When can we catch the Hello Skinny live show?
I have gigs at Café Oto on 30th August and Brixton Electric on 17th November as part of the London Jazz Festival. I’m also planning an album launch at the end of September but not sure where that will be yet… watch this space! I play with several other bands as well so I was at the Worldwide Festival with Eska or on the road with Owiny Sigoma Band, Matthew Herbert and Sons Of Kemet.
Where can folks check out you and your music?
The album is coming out in September on Slowfoot Records and I’ve just finished a mixtape of all original music. You can find it at http://helloskinny.bandcamp.com/ and http://soundcloud.com/hello_skinny. Also check out my Facebook.
