Brownswood Bubblers Nine // Memotone

December 20, 2012

“Brownswood Bubblers provides a platform for unsung heroes and emerging talent from the Worldwide underground. The series distils the stream of exciting new artists that have become semi-permanent fixtures in Gilles’ playlists and DJ sets of late to create a suite of perfect bumps.” GP

Gilles comes correct yet again with the ninth instalment in the much-loved Bubblers series. Shining a spotlight on under-the-radar talent the world over, Bubblers returns with a line up as diverse and exciting as the record bag from which they came; a musical barometer to gauge the sound and stars of 2013.

We’re profiling the artists on the compilation and caught up with Memotone, whose track ‘Down Illusion’ features on the comp.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself please. Who are you, where are you from etc.?

Hello Brownswood, my name is William Yates and I’m 22 years old. I was brought up in the woodlands of Dorset (Dorset/Wiltshire boarder to be precise) and now live in Brighton. I have always been fascinated by music, listening or creating, so I am very grateful to have been given the chance to nurture my passion into something I survive off of.

How would you describe your music?

Music is always an adventure for me, and I would like to think of my own music as an adventure for others. Sometimes it can take you to places of liberation, sometimes into, deep, oppressive cracks of the mind.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

It would be silly of my to name only a few inspirations. Everything inspires me. The beauty of nature, the intermittent ugliness of man. Film, Music and literature (some of man’s redeemable assets.) Science and mathematics should also be added to that list.

Whom do you count amongst your most significant influences when it comes to production?

Lukid, Susumu Yokota, Murcof, Nico Muhly, Four tet, Amon Tobin, Thom Yorke, Brian Eno and DJ Shadow (Entroducing). But I listen to a lot more music which isn’t considered ‘producers’ music as such.

What releases / gigs are out there or coming soon?

Well, I just got back from Berlin which was great. On the release front, I am teaming up with Soosh to complete our ‘Memoosh’ EP which will be released on Project:Mooncircle in 2013. Other than that just busy working on that difficult second album!

Do you have a current DJ mix or any tracks that are available for free download right now that we could point folks to?

There are a few about the place at the moment. You can download an influences mix which I put together in wake of the album from Dummy here.

Also, there are free EP’s and single tracks galore to download from my website which is

Where can folks go online to check out you and your music?

Website / Soundcloud / Bandcamp / Facebook / Twitter / Youtube

But if you want to follow me on Soundcloud, Twitter, Facebook or even subscribe to my youtube channel (I am regularly uploading new live instrumental videos) you can do so via the links above.

What are you going to do after this interview?

Once I have finished typing this last paragraph I will play the Piano for about an hour probably, then I will take my dog on a walk with my girlfriend, eat  a good meal, listening to music, possibly watch a film (Werckmeister Haromies tonight I think!) before finally climbing into bed for story time (we are reading Rumo by Walter Moers at the moment. A childhood wonder!)

Shouts to Black Acre for being incredibly supportive and open minded. Also music respect to Ross and Will at A Future Without and Sam and Phil at what was (R.I.P) Raised By Records. CHEERS!
