Brownswood Bubblers Nine // The Hics
December 5, 2012
“Brownswood Bubblers provides a platform for unsung heroes and emerging talent from the Worldwide underground. The series distils the stream of exciting new artists that have become semi-permanent fixtures in Gilles’ playlists and DJ sets of late to create a suite of perfect bumps.” GP
Gilles comes correct yet again with the ninth instalment in the much-loved Bubblers series. Shining a spotlight on under-the-radar talent the world over, Bubblers returns with a line up as diverse and exciting as the record bag from which they came; a musical barometer to gauge the sound and stars of 2013.
We’re profiling the artists featured on the compilation, so caught up with The Hics, whose track ‘Lines’ features on the comp.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself please. Who are you, where are you from etc.?
We are a 6 piece band from London, Sam Paul Evans (Vox, Keys & Electronics), Roxane Barker (Vox), Jacob Welsh (Drums), Geordan Reid-Campbell (Guitar & Electronics), Matt Knox (Bass) and David Turay (Sax). Four of us met whilst studying music at school and college, and we met the other two through bumping into each other regularly during various musical jams and endeavours…
How would you describe your music?
Fresh Electronic Soul
Where do you draw your inspiration?
The approach we have is pretty organic I think, as we all produce and write it often starts with a idea or a track one of us has produced which we take into the band setting, or sometimes we’ll just jam out and see what occurs. We all play an instrument and all have some sort of musical gadget to make some noise with which is fun.
I guess we draw inspiration from many places, with all of us collectively having a massive range of musical backgrounds spanning many genres from jazz to prog rock. Growing up in a time where music is a lot more accessible has allowed us to hear a lot more whilst were young, we’ve all been through every sort of musical phase under the sun at some point.
Whom do you count amongst your most significant influences when it comes to production?
People like James Blake, Bonobo, J-Dilla, Mount Kimbie, Afta-1, Flying Lotus for the electronic side of things, and for the live soulful side of things, Little Dragon, Andreya Triana, Ella Fitzgerald, Robert Glasper, Hiatus Kaiyote. We’re pretty honoured to even be on the Same CD as a band of that Calibre! The list is endless…
What releases / gigs are out there or coming soon?
We Have an EP Set for release early 2013, and Plenty of gigs to follow, watch this space!
Where can folks go online to check out you and your music?
What are you going to do after this interview?
Cuppa Tea? Maybe with a bourbon Biscuit?
