Brownswood Bubblers Six // RYAT

October 22, 2010

As is customary, we’re posting up little profiles to serve as quick introductions to the artists featured on our brand new Bubblers compilation – the sixth in the series. Christina RYAT contributes an awesome vocal to ‘A Place In My Heart’ with Taylor McFerrin on the boards (Taylor also produced ‘Love Conversation’ for Jose James‘ BLACKMAGIC LP). I hear shades of Feist, Bjork and Joanna Newsom – some of my favourite vocalists – but maybe that’s just me. Anyways, it’s a killer track all round. Hold tight for the album which will likely hit the Brownswood Store early next week. The official release date is 8th November 2010.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself please?
My name is RYAT aka Christina. I am an artist based out of Philadelphia, but find myself traveling and recording all over, feeding off new environments and people. I am really into live sampling with my vocals/instruments and looping and processing them to create a full, eclectic sound. I do this planned and also improvised. I often focus on collaborating because it truly inspires me most to bounce off other instrumentalist and beatmakers. Although, my favourite time, is alone time with my headphones and my laptop.

How would you describe your music?
My music is always evolving. Lately I am really into messing with time signatures, big beats and creating different pads and synths from my vocal looping and processing.

Where do you draw your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from my environment, the people in it and the stories and concepts that pull on my heart strings. I love seeing live music, especially jazz and classical. In my headphones I like to listen to experimental newer music that is more beat-oriented.

What RYAT releases are out there or coming soon?
1. I just put out “Avant Gold” (my latest LP) in September on an indie label in the US called Obvious Bandits. Worldwide it is available on iTunes.
2. I am currently working on an all vocal EP inspired by Native American history. Everything down to the beats are made through vocal processing. That will be out in Winter 2011.
3. Featured vocals – “A Place In My Heart” in collaboration with Taylor McFerrin, which is on Brownswood Bubblers Six.
4. Featured vocals – “Intricate Beauty” in collaboration with King Britt for his latest LP release.
5. Featured vocals – “Rain Song” in collaboration with The Disco Biscuits for their latest LP release.

As for gigs:

*I just finished a 6 week US/Canadian Tour and will be doing another in mid February/March 2011.
*In June 2011, I will be touring Europe again with a three piece band and electronics.
*Keep updated on my website for US East Coast dates (NY/Philly/DC/Baltimore) all winter.

Finally, where’s good for folks check out you and your music online?
