Brownswood electr*c 3 // Artist Focus // Aftawerks

September 19, 2012

The latest instalment in the Brownswood Electr*c series is out now. Alex Patchwork is on compiling duties once again, alongside Tom McCarthy (Black Atlantic / Earnest Endeavours) and the pair has unearthed another remarkable assortment of underground talent.

Listen to a teaser of the compilation below.

Jammed with exclusive, previously unreleased material – the rewards of endless online trawling, Soundcloud sifting and Bandcamp rummaging – Brownswood electr*c 3 unveils brand new heat from a host of electronic artists.

We caught up with Aftawerks, whose track ‘Girl’ features on the compilation.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself please. Who are you, where are you from etc.?

Hi, I’m Nathan, I live in north London, I love collecting old synths and recording gear and fiddling around with it. Using new technology to unlock the potential of old machines is really exciting, plus I love a bargain! And I’m always up for making music with other people – get in touch.

How would you describe your music?

The sound of a manchild playing with his toys.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

Usually from other people making quality danceable electronic music, or going to a really good party or night. Also all the gear is very inspiring to use, until it breaks and you attempt to fix it yourself even though you know you’re shit at soldering, and then your uncle has to fix it for you and undo all your damage.

Whom do you count amongst your most significant influences when it comes to production?

Luke Vibert. I am the biggest Vibert fanboy. I don’t know any other artist who produces such a range of different styles of electronic, and so consistently well. He’s got such a feel for rhythm, really lush melodies nice deep bass. Whether he’s making jungle, acid, disco, grime etc, the music is always utterly devastating on the dancefloor. And once you get into him there’s almost 2 decades worth of quality music to dip into. Thanks Luke.

There are loads of others but I keep writing really long boring lists here so I shall refrain.

What releases / gigs are out there or coming soon?

None – I hope to do both soon, depending on how well I can balance making music with other stuff like earning money to pay for all the electricity bills. I have just rebuilt my studio in a new house and bought a new beanbag to sit on while I make music, so I hope this will usher in a new era of creativity.

Do you have a current DJ mix or any tracks that are available for free download right now that we could point folks to?

Check out my Soundcloud, I think you can download most of them and I update it pretty regularly. Give me a PM if you want any tunes I put up there for a DJ mix or anything.

Where can folks go online to check out you and your music?

Feel free to get in touch.

What are you going to do after this interview?

I’m going to strip my bicycle, clean it and put it back together.
