Calling Planet Earth Exhibiton // 7th-29th June 2012
June 27, 2012
Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to a local art exhibition ‘Calling Planet Earth’ which explores the many cosmic myths, philosophies and the iconic jazz musician Sun Ra who is a pioneer of free improvisation and one of the figureheads of Afrofuturism, a movement that has inspired artists from Jean-Michel Basquiat to Flying Lotus.
Being one of Gilles’ favourite musicians, I thought it would be cool to go and check it out Emily Evans’ [artist] impression of this legend. Using a mixture of collage, illustration, paint, gold foil, and vinyl, Emily pays homage to the celebrated musical genius, interpreting his prolific work and ideas in her distinctive style.
Emily Evans is an artist based in Hackney, London. She is a contributor to Bare Bones, and member of the artist-run South Kilburn Studios. Her work has been featured by Dazed Digital, Wonderland, The Guardian and Design Week.
So here’s to supporting up-and-coming talent in all artistic forms… … and while your there you can grab a cheeky tipple on the Dalston Roof Park. Enjoy!
