Gilles Peterson // Worldwide Awards 2015 // Introducing Alex Patchwork
January 12, 2015
Where in the world…
…are you now?
Sitting on the sofa at home in Cheam (Surrey) putting off dealing with the stack of washing up that is waiting for me in the kitchen.
Musically… that changes from day to day haha – I’m a bit of a magpie and I’ve always been interested in searching for new music and especially club music/scenes that spark off in different cities around the world. Lisbon has been the focus of my attentions this year where there are seemingly a ton of producers and crews (DJ Nigga Fox, DJ Marfox, DJ Lilocox, DJ Maboku to name but a few) who are making club music with a totally fresh sound. Big ups Principe Records who have been instrumental in highlighting the wealth of talent in Lisbon on a global platform.
Aside from that I’ve been loving Norvis Jr, B Lewis and Photay this year – alongside my Earnest Endeavours family of course: S/o Darkhouse Fam, Yung Gutted, Jimmy Jams, Bobby Evans and SelfSays.
…have you done your best performance?
“Performance” is a strong word haha… but I’ve had some great times DJing. Playing at Low End Theory in LA with my good friends Tom and Terence as Patchwork Pirates a few years back is a definite highlight. It’s been such an influential club night for us – we had to go on after Gaslamp Killer which was kinda nuts in itself, but on top of that it was the hottest, sweatiest room I’ve ever DJed in. The crowd were ace though. Great memories.
I’ve played a few times at Worldwide Festival too and those are always special sessions.
…has the best food?
Wow tough one. Wherever Dante Fried Chicken is cooking up for one. And Taco Zone food truck in Echo Park, LA.
…has the cutest boys / girls?
Copenhagen, no question. I went to DJ there in about 2006. The DJ put the needle on the first record, they opened the doors and about 100 hot girls danced into the room. Not stroll in, have a drink at the bar and then think about having a dance… they came in dancing. Kinda odd but so amazing.
…do you go to escape?
I’ve got two kids – there is no escape haha. Weirdly I really like the 22 minutes that I spend on the train from Cheam to Balham in the morning and again in the evening. That’s the only time I get to shut out the rest of the world and mess about trying to make music on my laptop.
…do you most want to go?
Generally back to bed.
how many languages can you say hello in? and can you prove it?
Salut… Holá… Ciao… that’s kinda it sorry.
