Worldwide Premiere // Bazaré D. Pablo et Orchestre // Nassima
August 20, 2015
These days, when the word ‘tropical’ is used in dance music circles, it’s more likely to conjure up images of high-tops, flat caps, fluorescent t-shirts and denim shorts being swallowed up by you know what. Thankfully, the interpretation of ‘tropical’ we’re more attuned to is the same one that Sofrito use as their guiding light. Across their Specials and Super Singles releases, the label’s steady output looks to tropical sounds from around the world, harnessing the energy and rhythms from Nigeria to Columbia, Angola to Cape Verde.
Their highly accomplished output has earned them listen-on-sight status at GPWW HQ, so we’re delighted to premiere a full length version from their latest EP. Ivoire Promotion takes us to Côte D’Ivoire and with ‘Nassima’ were are treated to a deep hybrid of soukous and highlife, recorded in Abidjan in 1975 by the mysterious Bazaré D. Pablo. Thumping percussion, generous shakers, intricate guitar, ethereal vocals and a solid bassline add up to a frenetic and energetic hip-shaker. Guaranteed dancing from the Sofrito camp once again.
