Worldwide Premiere // débruit with Murat Ertel – Duman
May 12, 2016
Ever hungry to explore complementary culture clashes through contemporary and traditional musical styles, débruit‘s next stop takes him to Istanbul. Recorded on a 15 day trip to Turkey’s cultural epicentre, the album was commissioned by the Europalia Arts Festival and enabled débruit to collaborate with some Turkish luminaries like leading fusion-jazz percussionist Okay Temiz, 70s Turkish-funk star Mustapha Özkent and gypsy master clarinettist Cüneyt Sepetçi.
Inspired by the city’s sounds, rhythms, lights and energy, débruit & Istanbul is a melting pot of traditional, visionary, electric, psychedelic, futuristic, melodic and experimental music. On ’Duman’, he links with Murat Ertel, lead singer and guitarist in BaBa ZuLa, one of Turkey’s most beloved alternative bands. The hypnotic cries of a guitar take centre stage, powerfully reverbing as if echoing across the Bosporus. débruit adds his own rhythmic touches with drum machines and synths, coming close to the minimal techno feel of Baris K’s Insanlar project.
débruit & Istanbul is out 27th May on his own ICI imprint. Pre-order the digital or vinyl from Bandcamp.
