Worldwide Premiere // Ryo Kawasaki – Dreams For Radha I, II, III
March 31, 2016
A writer, arranger, guitarist, producer, software innovator and amateur astronomer, Ryo Kawasaki is one of the greats, not just in Japan but throughout the jazz-speaking world. Compiled by NuNorthern Soul boss Phil Cooper, Selected Works narrows the scope of Kawasaki’s catalogue to just five tracks in a four year recording period. Not only an impressive coup for a young label label, it’s also a huge service to contemporary music.
Taken from Mirror Of My Mind (1979), ‘Dreams for Radha Part I, II and III’ is an eight-minute journey through (you guessed it!) three parts of Kawasaki’s musical mind. Spanish guitar intricacies provide a gentle introduction, before salsa rhythms, “la la la” vocals, trumpet flares and a Santana-esque guitar characterise the middle section. Just after the five minute mark, the tempo increases further, stirring the components of the previous section into a controlled frenzy. A delightful example of Kawasaki’s ability to fuse such musical diversity at a time when few others dared.
