Havana Cultura // Havana Club Rumba Sessions and Daymé Arocena Tour
February 19, 2016
We’ve announced an upcoming European tour with Havana Cultura featuring Cuban singer Daymé Arocena. Havana Cultura – Cuban rum maker Havana Club’s platform to promote Cuban culture – have continued their partnership with us to bring Daymé for six live shows dotted across the continent. Each show will include a screening of Havana Club Rumba Sessions: La Clave, a feature-length documentary featuring Daymé that explores the roots of Cuban rumba.
Produced in collaboration with the Havana Cultura, the film is one part of the latest chapter in the longstanding relationship between Gilles Peterson and Havana Cultura. The film features interviews with key figures across the island’s musical generations. It’s an insight into rumba’s continued significance in a country where a carefully preserved past has long sat side-by-side with exciting innovation. This film is about tracing the through lines running from slave communities’ spiritual drumming practises, the dancers and musicians who’ve preserved those traditions, through to the younger generation who’ve plucked out and re-contextualised the elements most exciting to them.
The other part of the project is compilation album ‘Havana Club Rumba Sessions’. Where the film depicts the lineage descending from the working class communities of Havana and Matanzas to modern-day dance floors, this is an exciting, global re-interpretation of rumba’s roots. The recordings of rumba’s three key styles were handed to a crop of producers working in the orbit of the most interesting corners of club music, resulting in a collection of remixes by a rich variety of international producers featuring guest vocals from Daymé. Pre-order here.
With a wonderfully light-hearted, amusing personality, Daymé sometimes emits laughter from within a song and a voice as versatile and changeable as a bird’s in different seasons. Her expressive descriptions of her life and love are perfect examples of a range of textures. A year after her debut album, ‘Nueva Era’, this incredible singer is fast gaining a reputation for her incendiary live sets.
