Havana Cultura Rumba Sessions // New Reginald Omas Mamode IV Remix
December 9, 2015
The latest chapter in the longstanding relationship between Gilles Peterson and the music of Cuba, it sees him explore the roots of rumba through a project comprising a feature length documentary and a collection of remixes to be released in 2016.
Produced in collaboration with Cuban rum maker Havana Club – that created the Havana Cultura platform to promote contemporary Cuban culture –, it’s another episode in a six-year relationship that’s already given vital exposure to different aspects of Cuba’s thriving music culture through the Havana Cultura album series.
Teasing ahead to next year Brownswood have released Reginald Omas Mamode IV’s ‘Havana Cool Out’ remix of Gilles Peterson’s Havana Cultura Band. The record-hoarding producer has taken parts, recorded by a band of esteemed Cuban Rumberos, as a jumping off point to build a characteristically languorous beat around.
Part of the South East London 22a crew headed up by Tenderlonious, the releases on the DIY label were given an early platform by Soho record shop institution Sounds of the Universe. Reginald had one 12” on Five Easy Pieces prior to that with plenty more since.
This new track comes ahead of a new project dedicated to exploring the roots of Cuban rumba, and trace its connection to contemporary dancefloor culture. Full details of the compilation will be announced in early 2016.
