My Town // Sinden Presents Los Angeles

January 23, 2013

“My Town” is a new feature wherein friends and family from around the world give us the lowdown on their home town – favourite bars, restaurants, record shops and more. Forget Time Out – this is the only city guide you need.

Up next, British DJ/producer/Grizzly label boss/radio broadcaster/tastemaker and all-round gent Sinden gives us his take on his current home Los Angeles.

Where is the best place to…

A Club Called Rhonda gets a shout out for being one of the best House/Disco/Techno parties in the city. Its usually packed to the rafters, really solid music line ups and has a really diverse, gay and straight party crowd. They’re expanding into a record label now too. Past guests include: Catz and Dogz, Motor City Drum Ensemble, DJ Pierre, Hercules, Aeroplane, Julio Bashmore, Metro Area etc.

The Do-Over (pic above) during the Summer season is also really steady on a Sunday afternoon. They have a dedicated following,  much like Rhonda. It’s more steeped in Rap but you can expect the music to be refreshingly eclectic. The guests aren’t announced, you can always rely on the top notch curation of the DJ bookings. Past guests include Flying Lotus, Thee Mike B, Simian Mobile Disco, Salva, Gaslamp Killer, Mayer Hawthorne.

L1L Death every Sunday at One Eyed Gypsy is also recommended and one of the best on the West coast. Its put on by The Overthrow crew from Atlanta. They’ve got their own aesthetic going on. Music policy is darker and twisted and the DJ’s that play like to switch up their sets accordingly. Past guests include Brenmar, Klever, Trouble & Bass, Brodinski, Shlohmo.

Chill Out:

Secret Headquarters is based in Silverlake and is the go to spot for Comics, zines and graphic novels. I really trust the buying in there, its not too geeky and they have great rotating exhibitions and opening nights.

Also our house!!!! We got BBQ, 3D TV, cute puppiess, smokes, drinks, snacks, video arcade machines and of course means to make music if you feel creative.

Eat / Drink:

LA has an abundance of places to eat and drink.

Xyta is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city. Its modern Mexican food with a twist. The Margaritas are so on point, definitely go for the Ahi Tuna tostadas.

Mozza Pizza is the best ‘fancy pizza’ spot i’ve been too. The wine is amazing too. Its over in W. Hollywood on Melrose. Be prepared to splash a bit.

Coles (pic above) is a staple in Downtown for french dip sandwiches. The Mac and cheese is amazing. The decor authentically 1920′s, little booths, darkly lit.

Katsuya is one of the best sushi places, not authentic more chic. There’s a few branches but best to avoid Hollywood one especially at the weekends.

Wurstkuche is the spot for hot dogs. It has 3 types for the veggies too. The beer selection is all German and Belgian and goes really hard.

Burger Lounge started off in San Diego but has moved over to Los Angeles now. Everything organic and healthy. The vegetarian Quinoa burger is to die for.

Association Bar has the best cocktails. After going to Coles head next door and get these guys to whip you up something.

Where is the best place to buy music?

Amoeba Records (pic above) is massively extensive and a good place to dedicate a day to. You can crate dig, find some CD rarities whist copping the latest releases.

Mount Analog is a cool indie record store, the spot for long out of print vinyls, new vinyls and cassettes (no CD’s). It’s extremely eclectic, well curated and extends to more than just music.

What’s the local expression/saying?

“Tight” or “wavy” or “vibes” I would say. All positive things!

Sum Up Your Town In Three Words:

What’s the best local delicacy/street food/snack.

The elote (Corn on the Cob) man in our neighbourhood delivers the best elotes (con chile y limon) and tamales on wheels!

Who is the best local talent in your area?

So difficult to single out since L.A has many.

Jerome LOL has been making moves over the past few years. Check him and also his label with Samo Soundboy, Body High.

Low Limit from Lazer Sword and one of the members of the Icee Hot crew has discernible taste.

Delroy Edwards. Low Limit put me onto him. He makes really crazy jacking ghetto house stuff.

Thee Mike B is one of the city’s best selectors. He throws down all kinds of sets.
