Q&A with Anenon (Brownswood Electr*c 2)

September 13, 2011

The musical ethos behind Brownswood Electr*c 2 has allowed beat making wiz kids from across the globe to gather under one compilation. We’ve learned that they’re proficient in production, but who are these dudes behind their wacky alias’s? A quick Q&A sessions shines a bit more light on these individuals..

Recently we interviewed DJ Dials about Brownswood Elect*c 2 and what’s new in San Francisco. In this post, we learn more about 2011 Red Bull Music Academy participant Anenon. The 27 year old composer and multi-instrumentalist, whose passions lies in the field of the ever changing beat scene. As the founder of creative imprint Non Projects, his label has seen releases from himself, Asura, Ana Caravelle, a.d.l.r. and RareBit. With Non Projects growing in strength from its gifted talents and unique outlook,  Simon and Non Projects have recently been featured in both XLR8R and on the cover of the LA Times’ Brand X weekly paper.

As Anenon, Simon’s music moves the listeners with  ghostly audio imagery. With heavy use of  piano melodies, synthesizers, saxophones and other errie sounds, listeners can get lost in the instrumental narrative that Anenon delivers.  Anenon has released under Non Projects, Alpha Pups and recently dropped Shifts on Brownswood Recordings. Shifts displays Anenon’s maturity in production, a sturdy 4×4 beat is accompanied by gentle claps, subtle precussions and twinkling synths. Even when the bassline drops, the track is progressively dreamy- holding a balance between broken beat ambiance and sonic stillness.

Keep your ears to the ground, as his full length debut is on the pipe line.

Who are you and where are you from?

I’m Brian Allen Simon and I record under the name Anenon. Anenon comes from the last 2 letters from my full name.  I’m the founder of the label Non Projects and a lifetime resident of Los Angeles. My obsession with music and sound began around 2001 at the age of 17 and I haven’t looked back since, devoting my college studies at UCLA to Music History and Theory and teaching myself electronics, composition and saxophone.

How would you describe your music?

Deep, personal and ethereal evocations to get lost in. Vibrant audio imagery.

Can you tell us a bit about ‘Shifts’?

With ‘shifts,’ I had a sudden urge to make a song with a steady kick drum that really “hit” – that was the buzzword in my head. When I have an idea in mind before I work on a track, the end result is either a total train-wreck or ends up like something completely unintended. ‘Shifts’ ended up being the latter – “hard” and “hitting” compared to a lot of my other recent work, but at the same time it came out a lot more playful, lush, wild and dense than I had originally imagined.

What releases do you have out already – or coming soon?

Currently available: ‘Silver Trees / Damiel’ split EP with Asura (Non Projects), a remix of Take on ‘Only Mountain: The Remixes’ (Alpha Pup) and a remix of Ana Caravelle on ‘Basic Climb Re-Imagined’ (Non Projects). A full length debut is currently in the works for Non Projects.
