WWA 2016 // Matthew Halsall, Leron Thomas and Deft Announced
November 17, 2015
There are three more exciting names join the line-up for our annual bash at Koko on the 16th January. This batch really reflects what has been a wonderful year for jazz and jazz-influenced sounds after the recent announcement that Kamasi Washington would be special guest. First of all, there’s Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra. Always pushing boundaries, Matthew Halsall brings his sublime spiritual jazz sound all of his own, influenced by contemporary electronica. Special guest appearance from vocalist Josephine Oniyama.
Leron Thomas is the next addition. Initially performing professionally with heavy hitters including Bilal, Billy Harper, Charles Tolliver and Roy Hargrove, he made a fluid progression into writing and performing his own “other” music, as a gifted trumpet player and vocalist; most recently his 10th solo release “Cliquish” was released on Heavenly Sweetness to critical acclaim.
From hard hitting, highly energised dance-floorcuts, to lo-fi, emotively powerful sound scapes, Deft is an exciting and innovative producer out of Croydon, skilfully hopping from headphone to dance styles through cinematic sound design, crisp intricate percussion and immersive atmospheres.
You can buy tickets now for £35 (with no booking fee!). Check out some profiles of artists already announced for the awards below.
